Bit Rate-Variability of H.264/AVC FRExt

In this report, we present our preliminary results about the video traffic bit rate variability and ratedistortion (RD) performance of the H.264/AVC encoder with “Fidelity Range Extensions” (FRExt) [1]. FRExt has recently been added to the H.264/AVC standard to further broaden the application domain towards transmission and storage of high definition (HD) content. Indications of the growing acceptance of the H.264/AVC standard and the FRExt amendment are its recent inclusion in application standards and industry consortia specifications, such as DVB, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, and ITU-R BT.1737. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the video traffic characteristics and compression performance of this new video codec from a networking research perspective. Recent studies [2], [3] have introduced and modeled the bit rate variability-distortion (VD) curve of open-loop (variable bit rate, or VBR) MPEG–4 Part 2 [4] encoded video at QCIF (176 × 144) and CIF (352×288) resolutions. The VD curve is the coefficient of variation (CoV ) (standard deviation normalized by the mean) of the frame size (in bits) as a function of the quantization scale or video quality metric. The VD curve has important implications for statistical multiplexing as the highest statistical multiplexing gain is typically achieved at the peak of the VD curve [2]. In this study, the RD and VD curves will be generated for a long HD video sequence (10 min., 17682 frames) encoded with H.264/AVC FRExt. We also generate the RD and VD curves for the CIF resolution version of the same sequence encoded with H.264/AVC in the “Main” profile. For comparison, we encode the HD sequence with the MPEG–2 [5] encoder and the CIF sequence with the MPEG–4 Part 2 [4] encoder. All encodings presented in this study are publicly available as video traces at: http://trace.eas.asu.edu/hd.
